Missed deadlines are the most avoidable expense a small business has. This is a plain-English calendar of the Rhode Island tax deadlines that matter most to small employers and owners in 2026 — sales tax, payroll withholding, unemployment and TDI, the annual report, and the federal dates that run alongside them. Bookmark it, and check it at the start of each quarter.
One rule to remember: when a due date lands on a weekend or holiday, it generally moves to the next business day. Always confirm specifics for your business — filing frequencies differ by how much you owe.

By tax type — how filing frequency works
RI sales & use tax. Returns are due the 20th of the month after the period. Whether you file monthly, quarterly, or annually depends on your tax liability — higher-volume sellers file more often. Details: our Rhode Island sales tax filing guide.
RI payroll withholding (RI-941). How often you remit depends on how much you withhold: roughly weekly if you withhold $600+ in a month, monthly (within 20 days of month-end) for $50–$600, and otherwise quarterly. The annual reconciliation (RI W-3) and W-2s are due January 31. Full breakdown: our Rhode Island payroll basics guide.
RI unemployment (UI) & TDI. Filed quarterly with the RI Department of Labor & Training, due at the end of the month after each quarter: Apr 30, Jul 31, Oct 31, and Jan 31.
RI annual report. LLCs and corporations file once a year, between February 1 and May 1, with the RI Department of State. Miss it and a late penalty applies. If you also pay the RI LLC annual tax, see our RI LLC annual tax guide.
Federal payroll & income. Form 941 is quarterly (Apr 30, Jul 31, Oct 31, Jan 31); FUTA Form 940, W-2s, and 1099-NEC are due Jan 31; estimated taxes are due Apr 15, Jun 15, Sep 15, and Jan 15.
